Cynthia (Cindy) Baskin

Pastor Cindy joined St. John as our interim pastor in January 2019.  Raised a Lutheran, Pastor Cindy earned her B.A. at St. Olaf College in Minnesota.  After graduation, she served for two years as a missionary in Papua New Guinea underthe auspices of the Board of World Missions of the Lutheran Church. Upon returning to the United States, she received a M.A. in Teaching from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota and then moved to Florida where she taught middle school science for 10 years. During these years, she found her way into an Episcopal Church, eventually joining a parish staff as lay Director of Program. Following a call to ordained ministry, she attended and graduated from Virginia Theological Seminary with an M.Div degree (1995).  Pastor Cindy was ordained as an Episcopal priest, serving as the senior pastor at St. James’ Episcopal Church in Potomac, Maryland, from 1999-2015 until she retired. Since then, Pastor Cindy has served as an interim pastor, first at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Lovettsville, Virginia, and now at St. John Lutheran, Riverdale.

Cindy enjoys working with others to enable Christ’s message of love and reconciliation to enter people’s lives. She believes the Church is called by God to enact Christ's mission through the ministry of all its members and therefore enjoys fostering cooperative efforts among all members and developing a communal and spiritual life rooted in worship, nurtured by study, and celebrated in outreach to the world.

I was baptized in the 50's at the little white church.  My family including grandparents and great grandparents were members of St John.  I remember attending many VBS weeks as a child and mother daughter banquets.  I have served as social ministry chairperson and as property chairperson and served two terms and vice president and 4 1/2 years as president.

Although not born a Lutheran, I have been a member at St. John since moving to Maryland 40 years ago and finding this welcoming congregation. My children and grandchildren have been raised here.  I recently retired from 30 years in the legal department at Discovery Communications and am now able to devote more time to church activities.  I especially enjoy singing, working on Vacation Bible School, and coordinating the annual Safe Haven Homeless Shelter.

I am originally from The Gambia which is in West Africa.  I came to the US when I was 13 years old - almost 26 years ago.  I will turn 40 this year.   I love to work with children.
